Miles and Mike discuss the goal of public education (or what it should be). If the problem is that the goal has evolved from a community need to an output on standardized tests, then how should school systems approach a solution? A strong emphasis is applied to community input and interpersonal relationships within the layers of school systems from the classroom to the board.
Miles’s Take
The goal of public education is either undefined or too ambiguous. Either one of these problems sets schools and students up for failure. Let’s explore why that is.
If the goal is undefined, nobody knows where to focus and I believe this is a central issue facing the education system. Everyone in the system believes the goal is something different than everyone else. And, with thousands or even millions of people focused on different goals, there is no possible way that success can be achieved or even defined.
